Free Drug Prevention Lesson Plan Available for Teachers

November 12, 2003

Free Drug Prevention Lesson Plans Available for Teachers

The American Council for Drug Education (ACDE) is offering drug prevention lesson plans online to help educators counteract misinformation youth receive about drugs from friends, the street and the media.

Each age specific lesson plan describes the objective of the lesson, background on the topic, resources and teacher tips, and then the activities to plan for this class time. The lesson plans are available for download at www.acde.org/educate/Default.htm.

The American Council for Drug Education (ACDE) was created to ensure that the public has access to scientific-based, compelling prevention programs and materials. ACDE develops educational programs, alternatives designed to engage teens, parents, employers, educators, health care providers, policy-makers and the media with authoritative information on substance abuse and its effects.

NHTSA Award Nominations Now Being Accepted

Community coalitions are invited to submit nominations for the 2004 National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Community Initiative Award that provides coalitions the tools to educate the public about traffic safety issues and the prevention of motor vehicle crashes caused by impaired driving.

Nominated coalitions must be able to: demonstrate a commitment to traffic safety issues in their local communities; present demonstrable outcomes related to their efforts; identify a specific NHTSA product or service in their implementation efforts; agree to share their results (process issues, lessons learned, outcomes) with other coalitions; and identify their organization as a community coalition, as defined by CADCA, currently operating in a local community.

The coalitions selected to receive the award will be recognized before their peers at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum XIV and receive a cash award. To obtain the nomination form, click www.cadca.org/coalitionsOnline/files/nhtsa2004.pdf. For questions, please contact Mary Larson at mlarson@cadca.org.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

FSU Substance Abuse Coalition Mini Grant Program

Florida Center for Prevention Research's Substance Abuse Coalition Mini-Grant program is now entering its 3rd and final phase.  Over $152,000 remains to be awarded to 7 or 8 substance abuse coalitions.  Applications for the 3rd phase must be delivered to Florida State University, The Florida Center for Prevention Research 2035 East Paul Dirac Drive, Room 133 Herb Morgan Building, Tallahassee, Fl. 32310-2770 by 4:00pm December 8, 2003.

Mini-Grants for new and growing coalitions can range up to $10,000; grants to established coalitions can go up to $24,500. So far this year, the program has helped 23 substance abuse coalitions pay for a wide range of priorities such as training, community forums and workshops, newsletters, movie theater pre-show slides, attendance at state and national prevention and coalition conferences; purchasing computers, furniture, and equipment, taking grant writing classes, conducting surveys, and much more.

If your coalition has a project or two that it has been trying to find funding for, take a minute and check out the web site, http://fcte.fsu.edu/minigrants/.   It contains information about the mini-grant program and applications can be downloaded.
